BETTINA CARL: ARTISTIC STATEMENT

My art work mainly consists of drawings. In installations, occasionally objects, texts

or photographs add to the works on paper. I consider art to be a contribution to the

semiotic systems whose functions are being determined by social structures. Maybe

art works are the commentaries nobody asked for, and maybe that is precisely what

will guarantee art's freedom as much as it will confine its impact.

I am fascinated by digressions, contradictions and superimpositions. Thus my formal

vocabulary is clearly subjective. In my drawings, I aim to reconstruct clusters of

thoughts and of perceptions, fugitive architectures of memories that inevitably fail

to fit in syntactical structures.

In order to persist, to be seen, eventually any image has to achieve a certain balance.

In my works, however, this balance remains precarious: an ephemeral halt of restless

elements that are about to disintegrate any time, moving on to become something else,

a different formation.
